Feeling Thankful

So Much to Look forward to

Although we'll continue to work with the NB government to make it possible for a grassroots forest school like Wild Wonder to operate in this province, we're very grateful to have the opportunity to offer forest school in Amherst, NS. Jason and Julie have kindly invited us to use their beautiful 80-acre homestead and forest on the Nappan Road. As we plan for our upcoming Autumn program, starting on Oct. 12, we wanted to share some photos of this magical property.

The large productive garden and greenhouse will yield opportunities for children to experience the joys of a fall harvest. Plus, the firepit will ensure that we get a chance to try cooking over the campfire. For instance, we look forward to digging up some potatoes, roasting them over the fire and enjoying them as a snack.

We are looking forward to having a creek to explore. Children will enjoy checking out the creatures that inhabit this small waterway, and playing in its muddy banks. We will be interested to see how water levels change over the course of the season. Rubber boots will definitely come in handy!

We're also excited for the many acres of forest trails we'll have to discover. And who knows, we might meet some interesting friends along the way. We'll be hanging up hammocks for rest times in the afternoons. When we get chilled on a cold day, the strawbale cabin and its small wood stove will provide a nice warm space to relax.

We know that the children will love this beautiful Nappan property as much as we do!

We're really looking forward to forest school during the beautiful fall months! Only a few spaces remain in this program for 3-6 year olds. If you'd like to sign up your child, please visit our programs page for more information.

A busy summer

We had a very busy summer at Wild Wonder! Here are a few updates:

Forest School Pilot Program

Our inaugural Wild Wonder Forest School program was a huge success! We had 8 wonderful mornings out at Beech Hill Park, each filled with play, exploration, stories and songs. Feedback from both children and parents was very positive and we couldn't have asked for a more magical start to our forest school journey. Check out our Facebook page for many photos!

Making Connections

Wild Wonder has been working to form partnerships with various groups to further our goal of getting folks outside and connecting with nature.

  • We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Fort Folly First Nation youth, taking them outside to explore the world outside through an imaginative adventure-filled nature day. Our second outing is planned for November.
  • We welcomed children from a local day camp to our forest school site for an afternoon of stories, forts and fairies.
  • We had a lovely morning session with MTA students in the Education for Sustainability course, who came to explore and reflect with us while learning more about forest school and the value of place-based education.

In just a few months' time, Wild Wonder has led a variety of nature-based sessions with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds. We are always so happy to see the positive and restorative effect of nature on those engaging in the simple act of getting out into the woods to play and explore.

Working with the Government

At present, we are unable to offer forest school programming in New Brunswick due to provincial legislation that requires us to meet the same standards as daycares (such as building size, etc). In an effort to support the existence of year-round, grassroots, outdoor programs (such as Wild Wonder Forest School), we are in regular communication with the various government departments that oversee this legislation. Until there are changes in NB regulations, we are grateful to be able to offer our Wild Wonder Forest School program in Amherst, NS, where outdoor recreation programs can operate due to exemptions from daycare legislation. Our beautiful Amherst location is just a short drive from Sackville, and we look forward to NB & NS families joining us there for forest school programming!
